The Jets finally pulled the plug today on their offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Fired from the staff after Coach Rex Ryan indicated all would be safe at the end of the season.
It's not at all a surprise, though. Schottenheimer has been roundly criticized for his game plans this season and for the lack of success of the Jets' offense. They were 25th overall in the NFL this year. He has also been partially blamed for the lack of development (or lack thereof) of quarterback Mark Sanchez. I've never been a fan of Sanchez, but how much of that was just a failure in coaching with Schottenheimer?
Whoever the Jets select as the new OC will need to figure out how to turn Sanchez around. It's possible that a new approach may work better with the former USC qb. I am still not a believer, but I'm willing to allow him
