Future Potential Owners Of The Los Angeles Dodgers Include Joe Torre and Steve Garvey

The Los Angeles Dodgers have suffered a great deal under owner Frank McCourt, but those years of suffering are soon to be over.  The Dodgers are about to find new owners.  MLB forced the Dodgers to put themselves up for sale after the team declared bankruptcy earlier in 2010.

Numerous groups have come forward indicating their interest in purchasing the Dodgers. Let's take a look at the most promising candidates:

  • Magic Johnson/former baseball exec Stan Kasten/Guggenheim Baseball Management
    • This group has members that can provide a large amount of capital (Guggenheim), an LA name to draw the fans (Magic), and a former well-respected baseball man (Kasten) to appease MLB.
    • For those who don't remember, Kasten was the former president of both the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals.  If they can put up a competitive bid, they'd be a favorite to win the team.
  • Steve Garvey, Orel Herscheiser, and Joey Herrick of Natural Balance Pet Foods
    • This group, composed of former Dodger stars, is the sentimental favorite. It's unlikely that they could put together the kind of bid that would win, however.
  • Management group with Joe Torre as the face and the financial backing of Rick Caruso, a real estate developer
    • Another sentimental favorite as Torre is a long-time MLB manager who just resigned his position as Executive Vice-President of baseball relations in order to join this bid to buy the Dodgers
  • Former Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley (with an unknown number of associates)
    • Most certainly O'Malley wishes he had never sold to McCourt in the first place
It looks certain that, no matter who wins the auction later this year, the Los Angeles Dodgers will be in much better hands going forward.
