Davis Cup: Djokovic Plays Doubles for Serbia

In today's Davis Cup action between Serbia and Sweden, #1-ranked Novak Djokovic was a surprise addition to the doubles team.

Playing with Zenad Zimonjic, Serbia's best doubles player, the Serbs were soundly defeated by Sweden's top doubles, Robert Lindstedt and Simon Aspelin, 6-4, 7-6, 7-5.

Djokovic was a surprise addition to the Serbian doubles team because he had pulled out of his singles matches a few days before, citing a sore knee.  Certainly the athleticism and agility requires in a doubles match is quite lower than a singles, but it still seemed an unusual choice for Djokovic who is undoubtedly looking to stay as healthy as possible to continue his dominant 2011 season.  Then again, Djokovic is intensely patriotic and no doubt wanted to participate at a level he felt comfortable in this round of the Davis Cup.

Djokovic does have one career doubles title to his name, winning the Queen's Club tournament in 2010 with Jonathan Erlich of Israel.

In 2011, Djokovic has a 2-3 doubles record (current ranking 245), with his two victories coming at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 at Indian Wells.  His partner at the time was Viktor Troicki (a fellow Serbian) and they managed to make it to the quarterfinals before losing.
