Klinsmann Sets Roster For Next Two US Friendly Matches - New/Old Faces

The United States has two upcoming friendly soccer matches in the coming few weeks.  The first match is on September 2 against Costa Rica in Los Angeles.  The second is in Belgium against their national team on September 6.

US Men's National Team Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann has set his roster for these matches.  There are some differences from the last match against Mexico, with some notable inclusions/exclusions.

Goalkeepers
Tim Howard
Bill Hamid
Defenders
Carlos Bocanegra
Edgar Castillo
Timothy Chandler
Steve Cherundolo
Clarence Goodson
Zach Lloyd
Michael Orozco
Heath Pearce
Tim Ream

Midfielders
Kyle Beckerman
Clint Dempsey
Maurice Edu
Fabian Johnson
Sacha Kljestan
Jeff Larentowicz
Robbie Rogers
Brek Shea
Jose Torres

Forwards
Juan Agudelo
Jose Altidore
Teal Bunbury
Landon Donovan

It looks like in some ways Klinsmann is trying to get his top stars used to playing his new style, but also shaking the trees of the American soccer pool to see what kind of quality there is.  There are definitely chances for a lot of younger, newer players now that Klinsmann is around.

The exciting part about this roster is that it more strongly resembles the full team as compared to the one that played against Mexico.  Stars such as Clint Dempsey and Jose Altidore were unable to play before, but should be important contributors to this team.  Michael Bradley, who usually starts, is in limbo with his club team and Klinsmann felt it best to not take him away from his team right now.

Some of the newer names invited may be unfamilar to casual US Soccer fans.
  • Teal Bunbury - 21 years old; Plays for Sporting Kansas City in the MLS; Has two caps;
  • Jeff Larentowicz -  28 years old; Plays for Colorado Rapids in MLS; Has one cap;
  • Fabian Johnson - 23 years old; Plays for TSG 1899 Hoffman in the Budesliga; German-born; 0 caps
  • Zach Lloyd - 24 years old; Plays for FC Dallas in the MLS; Has one cap
Interestingly enough, Lloyd and Larentowicz's one cap came in the same international game against Chile last December.  Bunbury also played in that game.
