I'm not sure exactly why this is such big news. Playing with a slight meniscal tear opens a player up to further injury down the road, so surgery seems like the best option.
The big question is why it's taken him this long to decide, and why the media insists his recovery is 4-6 weeks when Chipper Jones, who has a very similar injury, will be out 2-3 weeks.
What's even more disconcerting is that Rodriguez could have had the surgery by now, if he had elected to have a consultation after the initial injury on June 19. Instead, he will have surgery tomorrow in Miami and miss a crucial part of the season after the All-Star break.
I'm critical of the decision only because he was held out of games last week when he could have had the surgery then, speeding his recovery by at least a week.
