Rangers Fan Dies After Falling From Stands

At a Texas Rangers game tonight, a male fan fell to his death from the stands during the second inning.

A foul ball hit into left field was retrieved by Rangers star outfielder Josh Hamilton, who then tossed the ball up to the fan in a common, good-will gesture.  That fan, while catching the ball, leaned over the railing and lost his balance.  He then fell head-first 20 feet onto the concrete below.

It's surprising that more fans aren't injured or killed at ballparks.  From line drive foul balls to tossed bats, there is very good reason to be extra vigilant when at the ballpark.

Here are a few more ballpark incidents of fans falling:

  • In May, a fan at a Rockies game attempted to slide down a railing and fell 20 feet to the ground.  He later died of his injuries.
  • In June of 2010, a fan fell from the club level to the lower deck also at Rangers Ballpark while trying to catch a foul ball.  Although the fall looked quite gruesome, the fan survived.
  • In April 11, 1994, a female fan fell at Rangers Ballpark after slipping over a railing in right field and landing on empty seats.  She survived her serious injuries.
My thoughts and prayers are with that man's family and friends, as well as Josh Hamilton.
